The Druidic Order

Being a Druid is, more than anything, about power and life. Balancing Power and Life across not only two competing points but across many, dozens sometimes. The vast majority of Druids are members of the druidic order of their world. On our world there is a fairly strict hierarchy. At any given time there are at most 20 of the First Circle of druids (level 21 and higher) often FAR fewer. The first circle spend much of their time in discussion with one another to determine how best to keep things in balance. Using Animal Messenger and other rituals and magical items they get reports from and give directions to.. Second Circle druids (level 12-20) of whom there are never more than 40 (often many less) on any given world. When their numbers get too close it is an easy matter for one or more to be sent for a year of study on the Shadowfell, Feywild, or some other offworld location. Second Circle druids provide advice and guidance to Third Circle druids (levels 3-11) of whom there are never more than 80 on a given world. Now and then druids will rcv straightforward orders from one of their higher-ups “Proceed to the tributaries beneath Wheelbarrow Falls and find out what is happening to the turtle poulation.” but even in the Third Circle druids have a lot of freedom with regards to their activities. Initiates (level 0-2) are trained but not given orders or kept highly regimented. Druids are very careful to be respectful of one another as they know how important their duties toward nature can be. In times past there have been rumors of druids having to battle one another for advancement. This is false. What has occasionally happened is two (or more!) druids will disagree about the needs of nature in a given region and unable to settle their differences in any other manner will battle to unconsciousness which is to be followed by a two year banishment for the defeated party. This has also on a few occasions been the means by which two druids who both wished to remain in the world determined which would in fact spend a year wandering the Astral Sea or otherwise offworld when a particular ranks numbers grew too high. The Order knows how powerful it is and how many lives and species could be impacted if they just started throwing around their power without proper consideration.
